So i finally sat down for the first two episodes of Friends. It felt so good to dive in again and I hope some of you are at least a tiny bit as excited as I am. The show definitely gives me huge nostalgic vibes but also always makes me feel like everything is gonna be okay in the end. Anytime. Because they are gonna be there for me. By the way is there anyone else clapping along every single time in the intro? I just can't help it.
THE PILOT
What's happening? Five of our six friends are introduced in their favorite café. Just casually talking and fondly mocking each other when Rachel enters the café. And she's wearing a wedding dress (and an ugly one if i may say). Apparently she's left er fiancé at the altar and in that moment remembered her old friend Monica who she (as Monica correctly points out) didn't even invite to her wedding. Monica introduces her to Phoebe, Chandler and Joey because Rachel still remembers Monica's older brother Ross from her Highschool days. He remembers her too, obviously. Ross by the way has just been left by his wife because she found out she's a lesbian. What a slap in the face.
While Rachel is adjusting to Monica's place where she will be staying from now on the guys are assembling furniture at Ross' place (and it looks a lot like when i'm trying to do it) and Monica is on a date. She's falling for a really obvious line and ends up in bed with the guy. At work the following day she finds out that she's been fooled and ends up smashing his watch. You go girl!
We also get the next hint that something is gonna happen between Rachel and Ross when he talks about asking somebody out and who he could ask. The camera immediately switches to Rachel sitting in the apartment. Yes, ask her for example.
The next day Rachel decides to get one of those job things (her words, not mine) but instead comes back with a pair of boots. The other friends then encourage her to cut up her credit cards as a huge step towards independence.
The episode ends with a sweet talk between Ross and Rachel where he hints that he might ask her out (but of course doesn't) and she really doesn't seem to mind.
Best character of the episode: I love Phoebe and Chandler. She's just so sweet and unique from the very beginning and his sarcastic lines always get me.
Worst character of the episode: They are all very sweet and lovely here. Can't chose anyone this time.
Best quote:
Joey: "Hey, Phoebs, do you wanna help?"
Phoebe: "Oh, I wish I could, but I don't want to." How often I wish I could be as honest and straight forward as Phoebe with things like these.
Funniest moment: When the guys mock Monica about the fact that she has fallen for a line. It always makes me laugh so much.
THE ONE WITH THE SONOGRAM AT THE END
What's happening? Ross finds out that his ex wife is pregnant and doesn't really know what to do with that information. Does he want to be involved while she is raising is kid with her new girlfriend or not? To be fair it's not an easy decision. Meanwhile Rachel has to return her engagement ring which is difficult because she lost it. After looking through the apartment the friends find the ring in Monica's lasagna. (And of course Joey dives in because he's just Joey)
Which brings us to Monica's evening plans. A parental visit. It becomes obvious very quickly that Ross is the favorite child that can do no wrong while Monica is being criticized for everything she does and oh how much I can relate to that. Even when he finally spills the beans that his ex wife divorced him because she's a lesbian and is pregnant with his child their mother's first reaction is towards Monica "..and you knew about that?". So rude!
When Rachel goes to see Barry in order to return the ring he admits that he went to their honeymoon with her maid of honor instead. Seriously? What a douchebag.
At the clinic Ross has a discussion with his ex wife Carol and her new girlfriend Susan. It is obviously difficult for him and he doesn't really know how he can be involved in all this. Just when he wants to leave the doctor comes in and the baby's heartbeat can be heard over the sonogram. That changes his mind. Of course it does. How could it not?
Best character of the episode:
Rachel for the way she's handling the engagement ring situation and Monica for how she's holding up when her parents are being super rude.
Worst character of the episode:
Barry – he's just being annoying and disrespectful all the time. I know what Rachel did to him sucked to but i just can't stand that guy.
Ugly naked guy moment: The ugly naked guy who lives across the street and who the friends love to spy on through the window got a thigh-master. Ugh the mental images..
Best quote:
Monica: "Chandler, you're an only child, right? You don't have any of this?"
Chandler: "Well, no, although I did have an imaginary friend who my parents actually preferred."
Funniest moment: I always love Joey with food. How he dives into the Lasagna because it's ruined anyway made me crack up
So, what do you think about the first episodes? As much as I love the show I always feel like i need to get through the first few episodes a bit. I much prefer when the characters are a bit more established. Still, so much love for that show! What was your favorite moment?
By the way, look what I found on amazon and now seriously consider buying. It's a Lego version of Central Perk and yes I feel like i need it in my life.
